That's what my friend E. said as we fled her son's birthday party yesterday, after a few hurried bites of pizza, a few brief and disjointed conversations and about 30 minutes of wandering, fridge-opening and "I want to go home!!!"
She understood, because she has a son on the spectrum, and because she is a very good friend.
We'd spent the drive down trying to shush his full-throated tropical bird noises, not because they were quirky (we're waaay past that), but because they kept startling J., not exactly helpful while driving on a busy freeway.
"EEEEEEEEEKK!" he'd yell from the back seat. "EEEEEEK!!!"
And then, "I don't like people!! I don't like them!!!
My little cynic.
We finally caved and took him to Mickey D's, which, judging by the condition of Isaac stomach later that day, needs to do some serious soul-searching. And kitchen cleaning.
But I digress.
It all culminated in a hurried bath, pancakes for dinner and a sleeping, damp-haired boy, two exhausted and cranky parents, and a home viewing of The Bourne Ultimatum, which seemed oddly soothing after such a fractured day.
Tomorrow, Kindergarten.
Oy vey.
Mazel Tov.
You know what we say in the business:
Bad dress rehearsal, great opening night.
The kid will do fine.
P.S. Prep him for the bells and the alarms. That's my only piece of advice.

We do have to keep trying and yet some days I rather try to hide in a darkened room with a hot chocolate and a good book.
Hopefully it will all pay off later.

Hi there,
I found you via a link at GoodFountain. I've enjoyed a quick browse of your blog tonight and will definitely be back for more!
I had to tell you that your birthday party experience rang so true with me. I have a 4 year old son with Sensory Processing Disorder (that we know of so far), and he is usually stressed to the max at bday parties. That means that Hubby and I are, too. Ugh. We actually offered up a bribe to go somewhere else more "fun" (Lego store) than a party we were supposed to attend today. My Little Man JUMPED at the opportunity to avoid the mayhem and the "too many people and too much food" that he dreads.
Sorry you had a rough one, but I can totally understand. ;)

hi susan
i feel ya'. yesterday my son had a huge two-year-old style temper tantrum when denied a cookie by grandma, complete with kicking and hitting his poor mama. in the middle of it he wailed, out of the black and blue, "and i'm NEVER NEVER EVER going to kindergarten!!" today was better. i'll be thinking about you guys tomorrow.

Maybe he's worrying about the Big Day tomorrow? Best thing is you all got home safe and sound----sometimes you just have to close the book on a day and sigh!
Thinking of him and you tomorrow.
